Mary Ella Phipps, age 96, of Lamar, peacefully passed away early Tuesday morning, August 16, 2016, at her home surrounded by her family.

Mary was born March 11, 1920, to Ira Lilburn Harman & Mary Lee Jones Harman.  She graduated from Milford High School in 1938 and was a life-long resident of Barton County.  On July 21, 1938 she married her high school sweetheart, John Howard Phipps.  They farmed for many years.  After moving to Lamar she was manager of the license office for 12 years.  John and Mary placed their membership in Oakton United Methodist Church on Easter Sunday 1975.

After the loss of her beloved husband in 2008, Mary needed something to do to fill the lonely hours, so she began a card ministry, sending cards to everyone who had a need, or maybe a simple card of encouragement or just a smile.  You were truly blessed if you received a Mary Phipps card.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, John Phipps; three sisters, Irene Iannone, May Coleman, and Helen Jantz; a brother, Sonny Harman; and grandchildren Brad Cass & Amy Ortega.

Survivors include a son Gary (Lois) Phipps of Joplin, three daughters Nancy (Billy Bob) Cass  of Joplin, Linda (Gary) Colin and Janis Priest all of Lamar; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Delbert Phipps of Carthage and John Coleman of Granada Hills, California; and a large extended family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 18th at Daniel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.  Burial will be in Sheldon Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Oakton United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.

Matthew says "Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted." May you feel the comfort of our Lord as you go through this time.
In Jesus name I pray for you.

My prayers are with you as you go through this time of loss. May you feel the comfort promised in Matthew 5, "blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted." The Lord is with you to comfort you. I understand the hole it leaves...remember when my mother died in 2000. I still miss her in special events that only she would enjoy with me.

So sorry for your loss. I remember lots of good times with the Phipps family. Mary was always cooking good food. She was a good woman who lived a good life. I know you will miss her but she is walking the streets of gold and feeling great. Love you guys.
