Joan Elaine Halcomb, age 68, of Liberal, Missouri, passed away Saturday, September 1, 2012 at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas following a long illness.
Joan was born May 10, 1944, at Vacaville, California, one of the eight children of William Ocie and Goldie (Quick) Raper. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jack Raper; three sisters, infant Marie Raper, Jean Hukill, and Nadine Gebelin; and a great-grandson, Damien Boyd Walker.
On September 6, 1960, at Fairfield, California, Joan married Floyd Halcomb and they made their home in California for 15 years, moving to Barton County in 1975. In addition to being a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, Joan had worked at a greenhouse in Pittsburg and as a part-time housekeeper for Finley Engineering in Lamar for many years. She was an accomplished quilter and enjoyed all of nature, especially flowers and birds. Her greatest joy was found in her family and they all have great memories of the time spent with Joan playing video games. She was eagerly awaiting the birth of a great-grandbaby in February 2013.
Survivors include her husband of nearly 52 years, Floyd, of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Maria Kavanagh and Corena & Rusty Boyd, all of Liberal; an adopted daughter, Margaret Franklin, Pittsburg, Kansas; a brother, Anthony "Jim" Raper, Lamar; two sisters, Maxine Gibson and Virginia Davis, both of Lamar; three grandchildren, Gary Joe Kavanagh, Katrina Kavanagh, and Joshua Kavanagh, all of Liberal; and a large extended family.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 5th at Daniel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends immediately following the service. A private committal service will be held at Morehead Cemetery.
